Weekend Trip Packing List
Weekend trips are so fun. They’re a quick respite from the daily routines of life and keep things interesting. They’re also typically more affordable and accessible than a week or two-week long trip.
Weekend packing can seem challenging, but it doesn’t need to be overwhelming. This weekend trip packing list can be your guide to make prepping for a getaway even easier.

Weekend Trip Packing List
To start us off, let’s discuss what makes a good weekend trip and how this will help you plan and prepare for your getaway so you can have a memorable, fun, and comfortable time.
What Is A Good Weekend Trip
A good weekend trip is one that doesn’t require you to spend an entire day traveling. So that might mean less than 4 hours via a road trip or flying. Though if you’re down for a weekend trip across the pond to Europe, by all means go for it!
By planning ahead and packing well you can save time and save money so you can focus on having fun. One of my goals is to take more weekend trips in 2025, so I know I’ll be referencing this weekend packing list.
What To Pack For A Weekend Trip
Basic Clothing Items
To start, pack your clothing essentials to get through the weekend. That includes:
- Two to three pairs of pants or bottoms
- One pair of pants is usually jeans and the other might be casual linen pants or trousers
- Three tops
- Three pairs of undergarments (an extra pair doesn’t hurt but avoid packing double lol)
- Three pairs of socks
- Pajamas
- Swimsuit and flip flops (if you’ll be visiting a beach or pool)
Try to pack clothing with a similar color scheme so you can mix and match if needed.
Your Essential Shoes
Shoes take up so much room in luggage, so be very picky about what shoes you pack, and for the average weekend trip, you only need one or two pairs of shoes.
Cute sneakers are the most essential shoe. I suggest a simple white pair that will go with everything. This makes it easier to commit to packing light.
For your second pair of shoes, consider the activities and weather. If it’s cold, snowy weather, then I’m packing a pair of waterproof boots.
If it’s summer, I may add in a flat strappy sandal for dinner, but otherwise, the aforementioned white sneakers should cover my needs.
Toiletry Bag Items
Toiletry bags should include your essential personal items in travel sizes to save space. These items can include:
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Razor
- Deodorant
- Body wash and lotion
- Face wash, skin care and lotion
- Sunscreen
- Toothbrush, toothpaste and floss
- Perfume
- Contacts & contact solution
- Nail clippers
- Earplugs
- Moleskin patches (blister prevention)
- Medications
Many hotels provide some of these items like shampoo, conditioner and body wash, so it’s up to you if you’d like to use their amenities or to pack your own.
If you’re anything like me this might also be a great time to use up any of those free samples you have from Sephora of hair and skincare products as they’re usually enough for 1-2 uses and barely take up any room.
Hair Styling Items
I like to keep a few travel size versions of my favorite products and will typically always pack a blow-dry serum with heat protection and hair spray. You’ll also want a brush or comb, spare hair ties and a blow-dryer and flat iron or curling iron.
Makeup Items
Go with your bare minimum makeup routine here. I actually love taking my essential items on a trip and then when I come back home I find that it’s easier to get rid of the items I didn’t miss while I was gone.
For me the bare minimum includes: face tint, brow pencil, eyelash curler, mascara, bronzer, blush and setting spray. I try to pack cream or liquid blush and bronzer so I can apply with my fingers instead of needing to pack brushes. I also like to pack an eyeliner and my absolute favorite liquid eye tint.
The eye tint can be layered for more glam or just swipe on a small amount for an extra bit of color.
Water Bottle
Pack your favorite reusable water bottle so you have easy access to water in your hotel room and during your travels.
Something to Read or Listen To While Traveling
I always need something to read to pass the time. I love packing my Kindle as it’s smaller than a book and fits in my Baggu bag.
Go ahead and pack a physical book if you prefer or download some audiobooks or podcasts to pass time while you’re traveling to your destination. Don’t forget your headphones if you’re choosing to go the audio route.
Portable Chargers
Don’t forget to pack at least one portable charger. Don’t waste time having to head back to your hotel to charge your phone when instead you can get a full charge on the go with my favorite Anker portable charger.
Charging Cords
Don’t forget your charging cords! Pack your phone charger, portable charger charging cords, Kindle, etc.
Umbrella
If there’s a small chance of rain over the weekend, pack a small umbrella.
Crossbody Bag or Purse
Bring your go-to crossbody bag for travels with you. I highly suggest the medium crescent Baggu as it’s cute, comfortable and can fit my phone, snack, portable chargers for when I’m out exploring. And it’s a great personal item bag for a flight.
Jewelry
My tip is to wear the jewelry you’re planning to wear over the weekend as you get dressed the first morning of your trip. So, you’ll find me at the airport in my comfy travel outfit with my daily rings, bracelets and necklaces for the weekend.
I’ll keep a small velvety jewelry bag in my “personal item” purse so if I do need to take something off or don’t want to wear it while traveling, it will still be close to me at all times.
Jacket and Weather Accessories
Depending on the weather forecast, you’ll need a jacket and potentially some other accessories.
If it’s spring and fall then I pack a lightweight jacket. And, of course, a heavier coat and beanie and gloves for winter trips.
If there’s a chance of rain I always pack a baseball cap so I can hide my hair. And sunglasses pretty much year-round.

How To Pack For A Weekend Trip
Check the Weather and Consider Your Destination
As your weekend getaway gets closer, keep an eye on the weather and adjust your trip packing list as needed. I often end up making some last minute adjustments.
Consider your destination too, as a place like Phoenix, Arizona will likely be dry and hot, so you’ll want to opt for lightweight fabrics. If you’re headed to New York City, I have a great NYC packing list to reference.
Use Packing Cubes
Packing cubes, especially these compression style cubes, help save space in your bag and organize all of your items. One of my packing tips is to organize your items in their own packing cube, so all my toiletries and hair care items go in one cube, pants in another, tops in another, etc.
Pick the Appropriate Luggage
When planning your trip, consider the destination, weather and your personal preferences when choosing luggage.
If I’m doing a short road trip weekend, then a simple weekender bag is usually sufficient and can also be used as a carry on bag.
If I’m flying, I prefer using roller luggage like my July carry on trunk.
However, if your destination involves staying at a hostel or going from place to place over the weekend, you might want to stick to a big travel backpack.
Calpak has a great selection of 26L Laptop Duffel Backpacks in cute colors.
