Ultimate Business Trip Packing List

While planning out a business trip packing list can be stressful, I find business travel to typically be quite fun. You’ll want to be mindful of the differences from packing for a leisure trip.

However, I find that having a set packing list and strategy makes business trips much more seamless and makes the packing process a breeze!

Business Trip Packing List

I’ll be covering items to pack, packing tips and strategies and more below to help you pack the right items for travel for business and make your work trips as comfortable and productive as possible.

What To Pack For A Business Trip

Essentials to Pack for a Business Trip

Business Appropriate Clothing

Some of these essentials are obvious, but it’s always helpful to have them listed. What kind of trip is this? Will you be presenting or visiting other offices? Is this to attend a conference? What industry do you work in?

All of these questions will influence what kind of outfits you should be packing and if you need to include dress shirts and dress shoes. If you’re uncertain, it does not hurt to have a few items for a nicer, business dress look.

Comfortable Shoes

I recommend 2-3 pairs of shoes. You’ll want a sneaker or something comfortable to actually travel in.

Additionally, you’ll need work-appropriate footwear. I work in marketing in the tech industry, so the work-appropriate footwear is somewhat casual too, like a pair of Adidas Sambas, or a simple white leather sneaker, or boots. If I want a “nicer” shoe, then I’ll go with a loafer or a pair of flats.

I’ve never needed a pair of heels on a work trip, but if you are giving a big presentation or attending an awards ceremony, etc. you’ll want to dress for the occasion and may need a dressier footwear option to go with your business attire.

Travel Outfit

When I’m traveling on a personal trip, I typically just wear leggings or joggers on my long flights with a basic t-shirt and a hoodie. I’ll wear this on most of my business trips if I expect to land the day before any work needs and if I won’t be on a flight with any execs.

If I’m traveling with an exec and I expect to be heading straight into an office or event or business meetings from the flight, then I’ll adjust to a comfortable, but more put together look. That might mean opting for trousers from an athletic brand.

I love both the Lululemon Daydrift High Rise Trouser and Alo High-Waist Dreamscape Trouser for this situation.

You could even go for the Rag & Bone sweatpants that look like jeans!

Travel Documents

Ensure you have all necessary travel documents. If you’re flying, you’ll need a Real ID and if you’re heading abroad, don’t forget your passport and review any visa or entry requirements.

Business Cards

If these are common in your industry, bring some along. I haven’t used them in years as I work in marketing, but my friends who work in sales still find them useful.

Must-Have Toiletries and Beauty Items

For a work trip, stick to your most essential and pared down toiletries and beauty items. Meaning you can leave the hair mask at home and follow a simple beauty routine.

Stain Remover

Always keep a stain remover like a Tide pen handy when traveling, but especially on a work trip.

Travel Adapters

If you’re heading out of the country, ensure you have travel adapters for your new destination.

Business ID Card

If you’re visiting another office, don’t forget to grab your office ID card!

What to Pack for Overnight Business Trip

For an overnight trip, you can reference the items above and just plan to streamline your items so you’re not lugging along anything you don’t need.

What to Pack for a Week Long Business Trip

For a week-long trip, consider all the items above, as well as these:

Travel Laundry Detergent

Pack some travel-friendly laundry detergent. Even if you’re able to pack enough clothing to last you all week, you may decide you want to repeat an item, maybe something gets stained, or the weather changes so much you need to rewear warmer clothes.

Fitness Clothing

If you’re traveling for a week-long trip, you’ll want to prioritize some time for your health! So pack the sneakers and workout clothes.

Reusable Water Bottle

It’s always good to have one of these for any trip and they’re pretty much an essential item.

Healthy Snacks

I often pack plain oatmeal, some LMNT hydration packs, and Larabars.

What to Pack for a Month Long Business Trip

For a month-long trip, you’ll want to consider all of the items above, but just pack more of it.

For your toiletries, you’ll either need to pack regular size items instead of travel-size or just plan to purchase as needed during your trip. And don’t forget menstrual products for a month-long trip if you expect to have your period.

Bring some personal items for entertainment, like your Kindle, books, video game travel console, etc.

How To Pack For A Business Trip

Protect Your Tech

Keep your laptop, power bank and any other needed tech fully charged and protected while traveling. For electronic devices you can get a padded sleeve or pouch to keep items cushioned while traveling.

Maximize Every Bit of Space

Sometimes when traveling for work, you’ll need to be carry-on only so you need to maximize every square inch of that luggage!

Roll up socks inside of your shoes. Be diligent with packing only what you need and nothing extra.

Consider Vacuum-Sealed Bags

For more space, you can try the vacuum-sealed travel bags. The ones I’ve used don’t require a vacuum, instead it’s sealed with a pump that pulls out all the extra air. You could also try compression packing cubes.
