With the city constantly buzzing and attracting visitors from all over, it takes a little extra planning to find the perfect moment. But trust me, taking the time to get it right is completely worth it. These destinations are so special!
In this post, I’ll explain how to plan your NYC proposal and some of my favorite destinations to get your “yes.”
How To Propose In NYC For An Unforgettable Yes
Focus on making it personal, not trendy.
When planning your New York City proposal, it’s easy to take inspiration from Instagram and the most popular tourist traps on Google. However, try to keep the moment personal to who you are as a couple. It’s worth it not to look back and realize you let trends guide you to a cliché proposal. You want something that will hold its significance even decades later!
Be aware of potential restrictions.
Before locking in your top proposal ideas, consider potential restrictions. Some locations may not allow photography, proposals, or intimate setups, and access to certain areas could be limited. Always call ahead to confirm details, this ensures that everything goes smoothly.
Consider the location and time.

Evil Twin Brewing in Ridgewood is a great unconventional proposal spot for laid-back couples. It’s not traditionally romantic, but it’s bright, artsy, and intimate. The best time to plan a proposal would be in the spring or summer when the outdoor space is open. However, the inside is just as memorable for a relaxed proposal vibe!
Ferry from DUMBO to Williamsburg
Picture this: Your evening starts with a romantic stroll on the East River promenade. Then, you have a romantic picnic in Empire Fulton Ferry Park with a special treat from Almondine Bakery. Finally, you board the ferry to Williamsburg at sunset to propose with the backdrop of the sparkling Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty. It’s romantic and truly feels so magical.
Stephen A. Schwarzman Building (NY Public Library)
If you and your soon-to-be-fiancée are lovers of literature or classic arts in general, this NY Public Library is the perfect proposal spot. Inside is cinematic, cozy, and full of natural light. Outside is iconic, grand, and sophisticated.
Either location is perfect! Just remember to talk to library staff beforehand to get permission for an inside proposal. Mercer Labs, Museum of Art and Technology
A totally unique proposal spot is Mercer Labs. I visited once on a double date once and absolutely loved the experience. The modern and immersive atmosphere will truly make the moment memorable, especially for a creative or techy couple. If you’ve never been, imagine stepping into an artwork and proposing inside. It’s a magical and unforgettable idea!
Top of the Rock Observation Deck
This one is a classic, but it’ll never lose its spark. It’s a viewing platform located at the top of 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Midtown. It has panoramic views of the city, including the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. It’s gorgeous any time of day! Just be aware that this is a really popular tourist spot, so it can get crowded depending on when you go.
Bryant Park
Bryant Park is a remarkable proposal spot a block from Times Square. It offers charm year-round with seasonal touches that make each experience feel unique. And, it’s completely free! In the spring, the park is full of vibrant blooms. The summer offers outdoor movie nights. In the fall, the trees are absolutely breathtaking. And the winter is probably the most magical. The park transforms into a holiday wonderland with an ice skating rink, twinkling lights, and a festive Christmas market.
The High Line
The High Line is a super unique elevated park built on a decommissioned freight rail line. It’s a couple of miles of greenery, art installations, and an amazing city view! However, it can be a popular spot depending on the time of day. I recommend an early morning or late afternoon proposal to share a peaceful, intimate moment.
Other Half Brewing
Other Half Brewing in Domino Park has an incredible waterfront view of the Manhattan skyline! Of course, I recommend the outdoor seating at sunset for a proposal. However, once she’s said yes, head inside for a craft beer and share the excitement.
Central Park
Of course, Central Park has to be on this list—it’s a New York staple! But the park itself is huge, so here are some of my top spots for proposals:
- The Mall (Literary Walk): Beautiful tree-lined path
- Bow Bridge: Iconic bridge and city skyline backdrop
- Wagner Cove: More secluded waterfront area
- Conservatory Garden: Seasonal flowers

Cherry Esplanade in the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens
Cherry blossoms blanket the city in late April and early May, creating the perfect backdrop for spring proposals. And, honestly, it’s not hard to catch some since there are about 35,000 across the five boroughs. That said, even though there are lots of places to see cherry blossoms in NYC, the Cherry Esplanade is by far the best. Located in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, this serene spot features over 200 trees in its dedicated Japanese-inspired landscape. I think it’d be such a romantic, whimsical place to propose.
Sunset on the Brooklyn Bridge
Here’s another popular choice, but you can’t deny the beauty from the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset! Just be mindful of the weather (I recommend spring or fall) for comfortable temperatures and ideal conditions. However, any time of year, you’re going to get a mesmerizing skyline view.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral
Proposing is a big deal, and if you want a location as grand and dramatic as the moment, St. Patrick’s Cathedral is a good pick. The Neo-Gothic architecture and public worship will be appealing to couples with a Catholic background or a love of the old world! Ensure you avoid Mass times when you’re planning your proposal.
Grand Central Terminal (Main Concourse)
Vaulted ceilings, celestial murals, cinematic design—Grand Central Terminal is one of the most dynamic and elegant backdrops in NYC. Not only is it beautiful, but it’s also in hundreds of movies. So if you and your partner are big movie buffs, all the more reason to consider this location! It can get noisy, as it’s an active transportation hub, but I think it just adds to the atmosphere.
The Met Cloisters
This is a branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art with incredible medieval European art and architecture. It looks like a medieval monastery that overlooks the Hudson River and is surrounded by lush gardens. With The Met itself, there are dozens of unique spots to propose, so you can make it personal to your relationship!
Little Island (Hudson River Park)
Speaking of the Hudson River, Little Island is another one-of-a-kind proposal spot. The park is a sculptural, elevated spot right over the river, and it’s visually unforgettable inside and out. There are tons of winding paths and small terraces to pop the question and celebrate your moment.
Museum of the Moving Image (Astoria)
This museum is dedicated to the art, history, and technology of film and television. The building features modern, striking architecture, and the interior is filled with interactive exhibits, film screenings, and cinematic displays. The location is as playful and exciting as it is beautiful and dramatic. There are many spaces inside and out for a proposal, and you can even rent certain areas! I highly recommend doing so if you want a more private and intimate experience.
