Family Game Night Ideas

Escape Room Challenge

I love escape rooms and think they’re great for a family game night. You can, of course, go to them in person, but they also make interactive online ones too! In fact, the digital ones are probably a lot more affordable than the cost of an entire family going to an escape room.

Masters of Mystery has several, positively-reviewed escape rooms that you can either use as a digital version or get printed.

Puzzle Game Night

Few things are more peaceful than working on a puzzle. And it’s a great, simple game that you can work on together as a group. Plus, when I think of family I think of everyone piled into my mom’s kitchen and that would probably be the only place where we could have the space for a puzzle or two.

Would You Rather?

Play “Would You Rather?” by coming up with two over-the-top scenarios that the average person would hate to experience. With family you can keep it clean and just come up with wild and gross scenarios.

Minute to Win It Games

There are so many Minute to Win It game ideas out there, like lining up a row of small tea light candles several feet long across a dining table and shouting a phrase to see how many you can blow out.

I’ve shared some other Minute to Win It style games and more in this post about family party games.

Board Games

There are many board games that would be great for a family game night, but some in particular are Monopoly, LIFE, Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble.

Classic Card Games

And of course, don’t forget the card games! Uno, Euchre, Monopoly Deal are all fun and easy card games for a family game night!

Couples Game Night Ideas

Video Game Night

If you have a few couples joining for game night, try to do a video game party! Mario Kart and Mario Party are perfect for small groups. You could also dig out some classic video games like Sonic or Tetris and pair people up for rounds of competition.

Interactive Board Games

For a couples game night, I think board games that split you up into competitive groups work well or have a lot of talking back and forth. This keeps everyone engaged and it’s fun to see couples work together or against one another and often leads to lots of laughter.

Some grown-up board game ideas include: Midnight Taboo, Taboo Uncensored, Rotten Apples, What Do You Meme and Cards of Humanity.

Lyrically Correct Card Game

The Lyrically Correct card game pulls on all your music knowledge in various themes.

I’d recommend the 90’s 2000’s version where you can guess answers related to musicians like N’Sync and Beyonce. I think I need to play this one at my next birthday party!

Ladies Night Game Night Ideas

Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever is a fun one to get a ladies night game night going. It’s also similar to the Drink If Bachelorette game that I’ve shared in the past.

Just go around the room and each person has to share something they’ve never done. If you’ve done it, you have to drink. You can even try this Never Have I Ever board game version that comes with paddles and suggested questions so you can just focus on laughing and drinking with your girlies.

Themed Trivia Night

Choose a theme or topic that your group of gals love and plan a trivia night around it. You can either DIY it and write out your own questions, find a version on Etsy, or see if a board game already exists for it.

For example, there’s several Friends-themed trivia games, there’s a Taylor Swift trivia game and more.

See tips on how to host a trivia night here!

Azul

Azul is such a pretty board game and so relaxing, I have to recommend it for the ladies.

Bananagrams

Bananagrams is a fun one for the girls, couples, family, etc. It’s one of my favorite games for anyone really, but especially good for people who like Scrabble, reading, etc. since you are creating various words in the game.

Lovestruck

Lovestruck is a fun immersive game that involves roleplaying. It’s perfect if your group of ladies are Bachelor fans as you’ll be recreating moments inspired by reality TV dating game shows like The Bachelor, Love is Blind and Love Island.

You don’t need to watch these shows to enjoy and play, but if you’re into them it just makes it that much more fun. And the game is perfect for groups of 5-10 number of people playing.

Romance vs. The World

Okay, this is the perfect game for book club girlies. Romance vs. The World is similar to Cards Against Humanity, but it’s for a rom-com, spicy book lover audience.

It’s perfect for a book club night, or a bachelorette party. And if you have a new bride in the group you could also try this fun bridal shower game.

Large Group Game Night Ideas

Murder Mystery Game Night

This is a classic for an adult game night!

Cryptic Killers offers several interactive unsolved murder case file games and you can also find online digital immersive murder mystery games.

You can keep it as simple as a board game or get really into it with a theme, costumes, assigning characters and all.

Beer Olympics

If you want to get all wild and crazy with a large group, then let me recommend a beer olympics. You can choose whatever assortment of games you’d like, though backyard style games like spinning around a baseball bat, potato sack racing, hula hooping and more are really fun to see people attempt while drinking a beer.

And then you can pair it with other beer drinking games like beer pong and flip cup! Now that I think about it, I should add Beer Olympics to my big list of engagement party games.

Two Truths and a Lie

Two Truths and a Lie is a great game for a large group to play as it’s quite simple and it’s a nice ice breaker. You simply go around the room and each person shares two truths and one lie about their self and the rest of the group has to guess which ones are true and which one is the lie.

Jokes on Who?

Jokes on Who? is a fun card game from the creators of What Do You Meme and a simple game to pick up and learn.

It’s a pop culture and history trivia game with a twist. You have to “guess who” based on made-up quotes.

Zoomy Zoomy / ZUMI ZUMI

Zoomy Zoomy or Zumi Zumi is a fun and simple drinking game. You get the group in a circle, as few as four people, but the bigger the group the better.

One person is the first “Zumi,” often the youngest person in the group and then everyone else is assigned their number going clockwise starting at 1 up to the total number of people.

To start, you all start clapping to the beat of bang, bang, clap, clap. The bang can be everyone slapping their hands on their thighs or on a table depending on if you’re standing or sitting around a table.

Then Zumi, starts the game by saying “Zumi, Zumi” to the beat along with the number of another player twice. So they’ll go something like “Zumi, Zumi, Five, Five.” This makes it the person who was assigned the #5’s turn. They need to stay on beat with the same clapping and go “Five, Five” and then choose another number in the group, so “Five, Five, Seven, Seven,” and so on.

When you make a mistake, and believe me, it starts to happen pretty often from people laughing, forgetting their number, or falling off beat, you have to take a drink. Then the chant starts again.

Limbo

If you want to get the group moving, warm them up with a game of limbo!

Charades

Charades is a great game option for a larger group. Split into teams of two, or even smaller, and have players take turns acting out a word or phrase without talking. They can only use gestures and body movements.

Their team members guess correctly what the answer is and the team with the most correct wins.

I also have some great large group game night ideas in this post about engagement party games.

Conversation Cards

Conversation cards are a great game to play with any group, but can be especially easy when trying to entertain a large group because there’s no real rules to follow and people can jump in and out of the game whenever.

A few popular conversation card options include: No Wrong Answers, The Original TableTopics, and BestSelf Ice Breaker cards.

How to Host a Game Night for Adults

Pick Your Date and Time

This can take time finding a good date for a large group, especially when it’s adults with kids and other obligations. So try to choose something a few weeks out that works for as many people as possible.

Choose Your Games and Optional Theme

Just scroll through the list above for the best party games for adults. If you’d like to you can choose a theme that fits with the games or one that goes with your menu. Or no theme at all!

I often like to create my own invitation in Canva so I always choose a simple theme to go with the party and center everything around that.

Set a Menu or Potluck

Choose your menu for the evening. I recommend finger foods for game nights as people can serve themselves and snack away while playing. Pair with some heartier options like pizza or chili to ensure everyone stays full.

If you’re doing a big theme like a murder mystery night you could base your menu on the game you’re playing.

Prep the House

Prepare your space with your usual cleaning routine, then make room for extra guests around the tables or wherever you plan to play the games. You may need to source or borrow some extra chairs for the evening too.

Have an Ice Breaker

Start the games and evening with an ice breaker. You could choose one of the games above, like Two Truths and a Lie, to kick everyone off. But the point is to introduce everyone to one another in case you have some new faces and to get folks warmed up for the rest of the fun.

Take Snack Breaks

After playing a few rounds, plan a short break for refreshments. Make a round of drinks for everyone or start topping off plates with fresh snacks.

Ease Into Harder Games

Depending on your group you might want to ease into the harder games.

End with a Fun One

And to wrap up the night, if there’s time, end with a fun one. Zoomy Zoomy is a favorite of mine, and something like Would You Rather would also be an easy, but humorous one.

Shop the games

Peruse and shop all the games shared above all in one place in my Amazon shopping list.
