Fun Games To Play When Hosting An Event For Adults
Anytime you’re hosting an event, party games are one of the best ways to brighten the mood and inspire engagement. You probably think about games at kids parties: a little pin the tail on the donkey or freeze dance and everyone is happy! But what about adult events?

Here’s the thing, we grown-ups love games too. We want to have fun, let loose, and create lasting memories! And, let’s be honest: we’re all tired of the yard games. Cornhole and bocce ball have been the focal point of too many adult parties—time for something new!
So, today I thought I’d share some of my favorite games to play as an adult. Whether you’re breaking the ice with new friends, team building with co-workers, or getting deeper with your family, these activities are sure to please.
Here are fun games to play at your next grown-up event:
Fun Games To Play When Hosting An Event For Adults
Icebreaker Games
Human Bingo
This game is perfect if you have a group of people who don’t know each other well. It forces people to get out of their comfort zone and go talk to new people in a fun, non-intimidating way. It’s also really easy to play, so no lengthy instructions at the beginning of the night.
To play Human Bingo, you first need to make or purchase your cards. Your bingo card should consist of things like “has their own business ” or “plays a music instrument.” Then, all attendees mingle until they find people to fill up the squares. The goal is to be the first one to call “bingo!”
Here are some ideas for Human Bingo squares:
- Has a pet that’s not a cat or dog
- Works in a creative field
- Is an only child
- Loves to read before bed
- Prefers tea over coffee
- Is a morning person
- Volunteers for a local cause
- Knows how to knit, sew, or crochet
- Is learning a new skill or hobby
- Has more than one degree
- The Office is their favorite TV show
- Has traveled solo
Speed Friending
We all know what speed dating is (probably not anyone’s favorite pastime!), but have you heard of speed friending? It’s a super engaging icebreaker that gets everyone talking and laughing. To set it up, line up two rows of chairs facing each other. Make sure there’s just the right number of seats for your guests—not too many and not too few.
Here’s where the fun begins: give everyone cards with conversation starters. When you say “go,” each pair chats for 2–4 minutes using the prompts. When time’s up, signal it with a sound effect, and have one row shift over a seat so everyone has a new partner. Rinse and repeat until everyone has connected!
Here are some conversation start ideas:
- What’s something you’ve gotten into recently—a hobby, show, or routine?
- Do you prefer spontaneous adventures or planned-out days?
- What’s your go-to comfort meal or favorite local place to eat?
- What’s something you’re proud of or excited about right now?
- What do you usually do on a Saturday morning?
Common Ground
If your event has everyone sitting at tables, this is a perfect icebreaker. Give each table a set amount of time (about 2–3 minutes) to chat and discover one thing they all have in common.
Instead of rewarding the group that finishes fastest, celebrate the team with the most surprising or unique common ground. For example, “We’ve all broken a finger” is way more interesting than “We all put on our pants one leg at a time.” Trust me, there will always be jokesters at the table, so the real winners are the ones who dig a little deeper.
Human Knot
Want to get your guests moving? Human Knot is one of the best ways to energize the room, create connections, and have everyone laughing.
To play, form groups of 6–12 people and have them stand in a circle. Each person reaches across and grabs someone else’s hand—and then does the same with their other hand. This creates a tangled mess of intertwined arms. The goal is to “untangle” without letting go.
Players will need to step over, duck under, twist, and—most importantly—communicate with their teammates to get back to a circle. Just a heads-up: this game can take up to 15 minutes, but the laughs and teamwork are totally worth it!
Creative Games
Portrait Swap
Have you seen those TikToks of couples painting portraits of each other? The easels are set up back-to-back, so the paintings are a total surprise when revealed. Most of the time the results are shockingly impressive or hilariously bad. Personally, I think this is a great party game!
Set up tables with each easel arranged so guests can only see their own canvas, not their partner’s. Provide all the supplies and let everyone create a portrait of the person sitting across from them. When the paintings are finished, sit in a circle for the big reveal—laughs and creative energy guaranteed!
This activity works best for groups who already know each other. That way, there aren’t awkward silences while painting or hurt feelings over less-than-flattering artwork.
DIY Board Game
If your friend group loves board games, why not let them create their own? Guests can work together as one big team or split into smaller groups. To make a DIY board game, you’ll want to provide plenty of materials. But beyond that, it’s up to each group to design the board, set the rules, come up with a title, and handle all the details!
Once the games are complete, everyone can play them together. Fair warning: this activity will probably take up the entire party. But if your guests love creativity and board games, they won’t mind at all! It’s a hands-on way to bring their ideas to life and enjoy a fun twist on the usual board game night.
Here’s what you should provide for your guest:
- Poster Board/Foam Board
- Markers, Crayons, or Colored Pencils
- Scissors
- Rulers
- Pawns/Tokens
- Dice
- Index Cards
- Spinners
- Timers/Hourglasses
- Stickers or Stamps
- Glue Sticks
Greeting Card Creation
We all love greeting cards, but what’s on store shelves can feel a little . . . shallow. If you’re hosting a classier get-together with your girlfriends, they’ll love making thoughtful, custom cards. These could be “just because” cards, seasonal greetings, or personalized notes for special occasions.
Just gather the girls around a table, provide plenty of creative supplies, and let the ideas flow. Add background music and cocktails, and you’ve got a simple yet memorable way to spend an afternoon or evening. The best part? Everyone leaves with thoughtful, handmade gifts to share with friends and family!
Decorate Cupcakes/Cookies
Who hasn’t dreamed of being on a Food Network cake decorating show? At your next party, bake (or buy) a bunch of cupcakes or cookies ahead of time, and hand them out to your guests. Then let everyone get creative with decorating supplies like icing, fondant, sprinkles, and more. Keep it simple, or challenge them to create something truly spectacular!

When the decorating is done, showcase everyone’s creations and dig in! Or, for a feel-good twist, organize the activity so all the treats go to a charity bake sale, to neighborhood kids, or other good cause. You can even make it more exciting with themed ideas, such as seasonal, color-based, flavor-based, or gourmet-themed. The more creative, the better!
Trivia/Guessing Games
Themed Trivia
Trivia is always a hit. You can make a whole night of this one! (Read my post on how to host a trivia night for tips on getting started.) You just need a list of questions and two teams of guests. As players provide the correct answers, they accumulate points. Whatever team has the most points at the end wins!
To make this game more fun, consider theming it! Here are some fun theme ideas for trivia:
- Movies and Film: Keep it broad or narrow it down to favorites like Marvel, Disney, or classic films.
- ‘90s and ‘00s Pop Culture: Choose any decades that resonate with your group.
- Celebrity Gossip: Cover every niche or focus on a specific fandom.
- History and Geography: Explore a region, a time period, or both.
- Sports: Make it broad or concentrate on one or two favorite sports.
- Food and Drink: Include quirky food facts, international cuisine, or culinary trivia.
Who Am I?
For this game, everyone gets a name tag of a famous person or character placed on their back or forehead. The goal is to figure out who you are by mingling and asking plenty of yes-or-no questions. Think of things like, “Am I in a movie?” or “Am I a historical figure?”
Rather than declaring a winner, keep playing until everyone has guessed their character. You can also make it themed to fit your party. Maybe they’re all Harry Potter characters, athletes, or historical figures—it’s up to you!
Name That
We all love talking about our favorite things, and “Name That” creates the perfect platform to do just that. At the beginning of each round, a small snippet of a TV show, movie, or song plays. The goal is for guests to guess from the audio alone, but make sure you have some clues prepared as well.
For each snippet guessed correctly, the player gets a point! Like other games, I recommend theming it to ensure the game isn’t too hard or too easy. Maybe they’re all nostalgic movies, Taylor Swift songs, or reality TV shows. No matter what you pick, your friends will have a blast!
Active and Outdoor Games
Minute To Win It
Minute to Win It games always get everyone laughing. They set the tone for the night, filling the party with energy and positivity. If you’re not familiar, the concept is simple: guests have under a minute to complete a silly or ridiculous task. For maximum fun, break everyone into teams and turn it into a relay race! The first team to finish all the challenges and cross the finish line wins.
Here are some Minute to Win It game ideas:
- Move marshmallows from one plate to another using a straw
- Shake ping pong balls out of a tissue box attached to your waist
- Pop as many balloons as possible by sitting on them
- Keep multiple hula hoops spinning on your waist at the same time
- Flip cup, stack attack, ping pong ball bounce (like Beer Pong)
Mystery Karaoke/Lip Sync Battle
If your group loves karaoke, here’s a fun way to gamify it. Have the player stand facing the “crowd” while a karaoke song plays behind them. The player will listen, guess the song, and jump in to sign at exactly the right moment. Everyone will be entertained, whether it’s from amazing performances or epic fails.

For another twist, try a Lip Sync Battle. Play a portion of a song, and at some point, stop the music. Whenever the music stops, participants must keep performing with the correct lyrics and melody! It has all the fun of Mystery Karaoke, but each turn lasts a little longer, keeping the laughs going.
Scavenger Hunt
Who doesn’t love a good scavenger hunt? Break your guests into two or more teams and send them on a wild adventure. It could be searching for items around the house or hunting down spots across the city. The choice is yours!
All you need is a series of clues that point to the target objects or locations. The goal is to be the first team to snap photos of or with all the clue answers. Guests love the mental challenge and the camaraderie of racing around with friends, making it a hit at any party!
Extreme Musical Chairs
If your group is active, getting outside for some physically intense games is a great idea. Extreme Musical Chairs takes the classic game to the next level. Set up rows of chairs on either side of a field or open space. Each side should have one fewer chair than the number of players.
The rules are simple. Say “go” or play some music, and guests race from one end of the field to the other. When they reach the chairs, they try to grab a seat before anyone else. After each round, remove a chair from either side and race again. Keep going until only one player is left standing! (For a wilder version, have opposing teams run in opposite directions.)
Conversation Games
Table Topics
Here’s another great game for events where guests are seated at tables. Place a stack of cards on each table with prompts that spark lighthearted or meaningful conversations. To keep things moving, have a leader at each table guide the discussion. There’s no real objective other than helping everyone get to know each other better!
For guests that don’t know each other well, use questions like these:
- If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
- What’s a favorite book, movie, or TV show you’d recommend?
- What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
And if your guests go way back, try prompts like this instead:
- If you could relive one day from our past together, which would it be?
- What’s a guilty pleasure you’ve had that I might not know about?
- What’s a fear you’ve overcome, or one you’re still working on?
Hot Seat
If you want to gamify a get-to-know-you activity, try Hot Seat. One person sits in a chair facing the group while a stack of questions (prepared in advance) gets passed to the other participants. The questions should be short and answerable in just a few words.
Set a timer for 1–2 minutes and get things rolling. In rapid succession, guests ask the player questions, and the player tries to answer as many as possible before time runs out. Questions can be silly, personal, or thought-provoking, but keep them brief!
Rotate players into the hot seat for each round. The person who answers the most questions within the time limit wins the game!
Two Truths and a Lie
Here’s a classic that never gets old: Two Truths and a Lie. Each person comes up with two facts about themselves and one lie. While everyone is deciding what to share, hand out papers so players can keep track of the “lies.”
Once everyone is ready, go around in a circle and let each person share their statements. After everyone has shared, go around again to reveal the lies! Be sure to allow plenty of time for conversation and laughter. It might make the game last a bit longer, but the whole point is to get people talking and connecting.
