While on Whole30 and in general, I turn to flavorful but healthy drinks to liven up my diet and prevent snacking. Have you heard that dehydration can be mistaken for hunger? Prevent dehydration from the get-go by getting your fill of H20 and enjoying these other healthy alternatives.
La Croix or other sparkling flavored waters
These are lifesavers. Sometimes I just NEED a carbonated beverage, but I really don’t want to mess with soda and all of it’s chemicals. Instead, I pick up a La Croix. You can also find sparkling waters for less at the grocery store. There is typically a store brand version. Just make sure to read the ingredient label to ensure there’s no added sweeteners like sucralose.
Teas – I really like matcha LOVE brand
I strongly suggest brewing your own tea instead of buying the bottled kind. The flavors will be SO much different. You’ll be able to control the sugar and guarantee the quality of your ingredients. Personally, I don’t need any sweetener in my teas. If you’re used to it, try using less and less each week until your palate no longer expects the extra sugar. IMO if I want something full of sugar, I don’t want it to be in my tea. I’d rather just enjoy a candy bar. ?
Kombucha
My favorite brand is Clearly Kombucha. The flavor isn’t too strong and the only added sweetness is from the 100% real fruit juice. Kombucha is full of probiotics and fermentation which is so great for your gut health.
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides
I start every morning with a scoop of collagen peptides in my tea (sometimes coffee), mixed with water and lemon juice or a 100% fruit juice. It’s even good just on it’s own in water. There are loads of benefits to increasing your collagen intake including:
-promoting youthful skin, healthier hair and stronger nails
-improving sleep
-increasing athletic performance
-keeping bones healthy and strong
-supporting joint health
-promoting healthy immune, digestive and central nervous systems
You can read all the details and reports on Vital Proteins’ site.
The reason I like Vital Proteins, specifically, is the quality of their products. The products are sustainably sourced and the collagen peptides are from pasture-raised, grass-fed cows. There are other brands out there that make collagen peptides, so feel free to do some research on which brand looks best to you.
Chia Seed Water
This isn’t so much a store bought drink although you could pick up a Mamma Chia drink if you want to go the easy route. Chia seeds are full of goodness like Omega-3s, protein, fiber and more. I like to add a TBSP to a tall glass of water with fruit or just a few drops of lemon juice. The chia seeds can help keep you fuller for longer and will provide you with all the benefits above.
Natural Calm Plus Calcium
This is a natural stress relief and magnesium supplement powder drink. I can’t say it’s switched my mood a 180 degrees whenever I drink it, but I do find it calming to drink near the end of the day before bed. I also notice that I sleep more soundly at night when I’ve drank Natural Calm. Magnesium supports regular blood sugar levels, promotes normal blood pressure and is required for producing and storing energy – aka it’s very important.
BCAAs
BCAA stands for Branched-Chain Amino Acids. BCAAs are not some crazy unhealthy workout supplement like diet pills. Instead, they truly are beneficial for your body before, during and after workouts. They help maintain muscles when you’re in a calorie-deficit (dieting) and also help you have longer and stronger workouts. I really like these BCAAs from PrettyFit that also contains caffeine. I’ll usually have a scoop in the morning alongside my collagen before I head to the gym. I also have some on the weekend post-workout for an extra energy boost and quicker muscle recovery. They do make BCAAs without caffeine which are great to have when you workout later in the day.
