Your 30th birthday is a big one. It’s a milestone to reflect on everything you’ve accomplished so far while getting excited about the adventures ahead. But hitting the big 3-0 does come with a few mixed emotions. Suddenly, you don’t feel like a kid anymore—the clothes you wore as a teen are now back in style with a younger generation, you get excited planning your meal prep and you start thinking about your future and who you want in it.
Because turning 30 is a little bittersweet, throwing a party is the perfect way to celebrate your friend or family member hitting this milestone. And one of the best ways to keep the celebration lively? Party games!
Today, I’m sharing 30th birthday games that are actually fun and can banish any lingering fears of a quarter-life crisis. Instead, celebrate the day (and the new chapter) with joy, laughter and celebration with friends.

Escape Room Challenge
I love a good escape room. Not only are they naturally a lot of fun, but they also encourage everyone to work together, solve puzzles, and beat the clock. This always leads to tons of laughter, friendly competition, and plenty of unforgettable memories.
You can go to an escape room in person, but the digital ones from Masters of Mystery are better for birthday parties, if you ask me. You could even theme the whole party after the game, if your friend really loves mysteries!
Mafia/Werewolf
“Mafia” or “Werewolf” is another great collaborative game option for birthday parties. It’s based around social deduction, so it keeps everyone fully engaged. There’s laughing, talking, and usually a good amount of passionate yelling (in good fun). It also takes little to no supplies to play, so it’s inexpensive, easy to learn, and can be played pretty much anywhere.
Classic Conversation Games
What about some good old-fashioned sleepover conversation games? They’re the perfect way to celebrate someone who grew up in the ’90s and 2000s and got to experience the magic of a classic slumber party. Plus, adult twists on these games can spark deep conversations or tear-inducing laughter.

Half a Minute to Win It
Minute to Win It games are always a hit. If you’re not familiar with them, they’re quick challenges where you have to complete a ridiculous (and often hilarious) task in under 60 seconds. However, for this version, give players only 30 seconds to honor the milestone!
Here are some examples:
- Strap a tissue box filled with ping-pong balls to your waist and shake until they’re all out.
- Place a cookie on your forehead and get it to your mouth without touching it.
- Keep several balloons in the air without letting them touch the ground.
- Transfer Skittles or M&M’s from one bowl to another using only a straw.
- Pop balloons by sitting, stomping, squeezing, or whatever else you can come up with.
Board Games or Card Games
If your party has a more casual, cozy vibe, board games and card games are an excellent choice. They encourage interaction and keep the energy light without requiring elaborate planning or lots of physical activity. Have everyone bring their favorite game or curate a selection specifically for the occasion. Below, I’ll list some of my favorite games for adults:

Beer Olympics
If you want games that will get a large group of people really riled up and crazy, do a Beer Olympics. The concept is pretty simple: participants must complete a series of challenges while drinking a beer. Potato sack races, hula hooping, limbo, relays—even musical chairs with a beer! The possibilities are endless, and it’s always a blast.
90s and Y2K Trivia
To get everyone talking and reminiscing, ’90s and 2000s trivia is a guaranteed hit. You can find plenty of example questions online, then all you have to do is break everyone into teams and keep score. This gives everyone a chance to share memories, laugh over old trends, and enjoy a night full of nostalgia!
Zoomy Zoomy/Zumi Zumi
Not ready for a full-on Beer Olympics? Let me recommend another of my favorite drinking games: Zoomy Zoomy (or Zumi Zumi). This game breeds friendly chaos as your friends get flustered, mix up numbers, and miss beats while trying to stay in sync.

Limbo
An oldie but a goodie! Limbo gets the whole party up and moving. It’s simple, doesn’t contain any complicated rules you have to explain repeatedly, and requires minimal setup. That means it’s both easy and inexpensive. Plus, it sparks plenty of friendly competition and creates hilarious photo opportunities.
Charades
Here’s another classic! If you want to put a unique spin on charades for the occasion, think of a theme. You could do a 90s/2000s theme with prompts like dial-up internet, Skip-It, or High School Musical. I also love the idea of an “adulting struggles” theme with things like doing laundry, filing taxes, or assembling IKEA furniture. Whatever you decide, charades is sure to please!
Guess the Year
For this game, create cards listing significant events from pop culture, news, sports, music, or even personal milestones of the person you’re celebrating. (Like, “What year did [name] perform in their school play?”) Make sure all events are within the last 30 years, of course. Then quiz each other on the year of these milestones for a fun, interactive walk down memory lane.
Roast or Toast
This one is perfect if you’re going out to dinner and don’t have space for games, or if you just want to keep activities light. It’s simple: each person around the table takes a turn offering a quick toast or roast. Each should be under a minute and can be as simple as a compliment or a short, embarrassing childhood memory. It’s a wonderful way to honor the birthday person!
Tipsy Twister
Nothing complicated about this one. After everyone has had a few drinks, roll out the Twister mat and start playing. You can even add extra challenges that are silly or sentimental. For example, if a player spins and lands on blue, they might have to spin around three times or share a memory they have with the person they’re celebrating. Make this one as wild or as tame as you want!
Throwback Karaoke or Lip Sync Battle
Nostalgic music is a must for a 30th birthday party. To make it even more fun, try karaoke or a lip sync battle! For karaoke, find sing-along versions of throwback hits on YouTube and grab anything that looks like a microphone. For a lip sync battle, create a playlist of songs and play them at random, allowing teams to compete. To take either option up a notch, consider renting a karaoke machine!
Big Scavenger Hunt
If you don’t want to stay indoors, a citywide scavenger hunt is absolutely unforgettable. It can take some time to plan, but the person you’re celebrating will appreciate it so much—and so will everyone who gets to participate!
Here’s how to do it:
- Choose 5-10 locations around the city that are meaningful, iconic, or just fun.
- Make clues for each location.
- Add challenges to receive clues.
- Take a photo at each landmark.
Bonus: Visit each landmark ahead of time and ask the owners or managers if you can leave a small gift with the next clue. It’s a fun surprise that adds an extra layer of excitement!
How To Make A 30th Birthday Party Special
Be sensitive to how the person may feel about the milestone
When party planning, remember that the birthday person may not be thrilled about turning 30. If that’s the case, maybe reconsider anything that may poke fun at the fact that they’re “getting older.”
Consider a theme inspired by the age or person
If you want to make the party more niche and personalized, consider a theme. It could be based on their age (like a Y2K party) or on their interests (like a Harry Potter theme). Get creative!
Think about how you’ll create ambiance
There are lots of ways to set the mood. Music, decorations, dress code, and even the aroma can all make a difference. Each element helps craft a specific atmosphere that fits your theme and celebrates your friend in a memorable way.
Assemble a custom playlist that matches the vibe
Speaking of music, don’t forget to put together a custom playlist long enough to last the whole evening. Keep the theme and the birthday person in mind when selecting the songs to make it truly special.
Curate an amazing drink and food menu
At a kids’ party, the pizza could be made of cardboard and the attendees wouldn’t care. However, at an adult party, we live for good food and drinks. Be thoughtful about the menu and consider putting more of your budget here than on decorations or even gifts. To make the menu extra special, concoct a signature cocktail for the person you’re celebrating!
Elevate the birthday cake tradition
There’s nothing wrong with a birthday cake, but as we get older, it becomes less special and exciting. Consider putting a creative spin on the tradition with a cupcake tower, dessert cart, donut wall, fondue fountain, ice cream sundae bar, or even a charcuterie platter. It’s still fun, but elevated for a 30th birthday party.
Have a few people prepare a toast
If you’re playing Roast or Toast, you’ve got this one covered. If you’re skipping that one, talk to a few people about preparing a special toast. It’s a great way to add a super sentimental element to the birthday party amid all the fun and playful chaos.
Use photos/videos to create a sentimental moment
Want everyone to get a little teary? Take photos or videos from the past and use them to create a special moment. You could do a slideshow, a picture wall, or even personalized party favors.
Figure out a way to capture memories
Another thing adults appreciate that kids don’t think twice about? Capturing the moment. Make sure someone is designated to document the evening with photos or videos, or consider hiring a professional. A photo booth is always a fun bonus, too!
Be thoughtful and intentional about gifts
Gifts aren’t necessary at a 30th birthday party. However, if you decide to give something, be really thoughtful about it rather than just getting more clutter. By 30, we all have enough “stuff.” So, brainstorm with other attendees about what you could get that would be useful or sentimental.
Consider a surprise element
Think of a surprise moment. Maybe the party itself is a surprise. Or, maybe you could surprise the person with an appearance from a long-distance friend, a live performer, a dessert reveal, or a particularly well-thought-out gift. It doesn’t have to be anything extravagant or expensive—just something you know will make them smile. And be considerate of whether they are someone who enjoys surprises. I am not someone who likes a big surprise LOL, but something small like a special dessert would be fun.
Look for as many opportunities to personalize as possible
The more personalized the party is, the bigger the impact. Consider the person you’re celebrating in every aspect of the event.
Make it equal parts fun, sentimental, and classy
Every birthday party should be elevated and a little wild. Too classy may get boring. Too sentimental may be overwhelming. And, too “fun” might get out of control. For the best party, keep it balanced.
